Graveyard Keeper 2 herbert: Complete Quest Guide
Graveyard Keeper 2 herbert quest guide: learn the Faith, burial certificate, Barracks, Magic bell, mercenary, and first-battle requirements.
Herbert is the Head of the Guards in Graveyard Keeper 2. His quest line begins with a burial certificate and continues through Faith, Barracks quality, the Magic bell, mercenaries, and the first battle against the zombies.
Where to find Herbert
Herbert waits at the Crossroads after the retreat from the town. His quests guide the progression toward the first battle and eventually send you to the Barracks.
Herbert’s quest order
1. Certificate, Please
Show Herbert a Burial Certificate from your first burial. You keep the certificate after showing it to him.
Completing this quest:
- Opens the village
- Starts the donkey’s regular corpse deliveries
- Adds 10 town quality
- Gives 10 reputation with Herbert
Until this quest is complete, the guards at the village gate turn you back.
2. Grave Expectations
Raise your graveyard quality to 10, then report back to Herbert. Nothing is spent when completing this objective.
This quest gives another 10 reputation with Herbert.
3. Fighting Spirit Required
Give Herbert 3 Faith. The Faith is consumed when you complete the quest.
You receive:
- 2 Town Gratitude
- 1 Story
- Access to the Barracks
Faith comes from sermons, so this step requires you to be able to hold one.
4. Swords and Bell
This quest has two objectives, and you can complete them in either order:
- Raise the Barracks quality to 12
- Bring Herbert a Magic bell
Report both objectives to Herbert in the Barracks. Each one gives Town Gratitude, and bringing the Magic bell also gives Pilgrim’s Clothes.
5. First… Sludge?
After completing the Barracks and Magic bell objectives, speak to Herbert in front of the Barracks. He gives you the red banner and 2 Healing Potions, and the first battle can begin.
How to make the Magic bell
The Magic bell is crafted at an anvil. Its recipe requires:
- 1 Blood
- 1 Bronze Ingot
The recipe must be unlocked before you can craft the bell. Once it is ready, bring it to Herbert in the Barracks.
How to reach Barracks quality 12
Barracks quality comes from two sources:
- Barricades built in the Barracks
- Mercenaries paid for the next battle
The three first-level barricade types are:
- Barricade I
- Spiked Barricade I
- Fortified Barricade I
Each barricade adds 2 quality and can only be placed in the Barracks.
The four mercenaries add 8 quality in total while they are paid for the next battle. Each paid mercenary contributes 2 quality through armour and a weapon. Unpaid mercenaries add nothing.
With all four mercenaries paid, you need two barricades to reach Barracks quality 12. Without paid mercenaries, you need six barricades.
How to unlock barricades
Barricades come from the Simple Barricades technology. This technology requires Reinforced Plank.
Reinforced Plank is under a reputation technology that requires 20 reputation with Herbert. Herbert’s first two quests provide exactly 20 reputation. Reputation technologies unlock automatically the next time you open the technology tree after reaching the required reputation; they are not bought directly.
Build the barricades inside the Barracks, since they cannot be placed elsewhere for this objective.
How to hire the mercenaries
The mercenaries are in the Barracks. They must be paid for the next battle before they contribute to Barracks quality.
Paying costs 5 silver for the first battle. After payment, the mercenaries count toward the Barracks quality requirement and are available for the fight.
First battle requirements
Before the battle begins, the game displays your defence power. This is based on:
- Barracks quality from barricades
- Paid mercenaries
The first battle requires 12 defence power. The Start button also remains disabled if you do not have a sword or bow on your hotbar.
When the requirements are met, speak to Herbert in front of the Barracks. Take the red banner he gives you to begin commanding the squad.
How the first battle works
During the battle, you can carry the banner and lead the squad or leave the troops to defend a position.
The battle objectives are:
- Defeat nearby enemies around the flags.
- Capture all enemy flags.
- Hold the captured flags until the battle ends.
The more troops near a flag, the faster it is captured. Watch the bars at the top of the screen to see when and where the zombies will attack.
You lose if the enemies capture your base or your health reaches zero.
Winning the first battle gives:
- 1 Defender’s Emblem
- 6 Zombie goo
- 4 Town Gratitude
